Day 10 of 20: Plastiglomerate

Just released June 9th:Scientists find plastic rock on Big Island beach.  (Thanks again to my colleague, Rob, who forwarded this.)

Plastiglomerate looks like this. Here's a sample:
From Algalita Marine Research Institute in California, as highlighted on Hawaii's KITV News: http://www.kitv.com/news/scientists-find-plastic-rock-on-big-island-beach/26405812

It pollutes our oceans and beaches, kills coral reef, and as it spreads it creates a new synthetic habitat.

Hawaii's news coverage indicates that "partial lid containers contributed to 22 percent of the fragments."

Will plastiglomerate be the lasting legacy of human life?

So far today, managed to avoid plastics, but unwittingly created garbage when I used aluminum foil to take leftovers from breakfast with one of my favorite people. Tin foil is technically recyclable but not in my municipality. Hello, landfill.

Note to self: bring a reusable container for leftovers when eating in restaurants.
